About the Story

As girls Iris and Lily were inseparable, whispering their dreams and fears to one another in their shared bed. How could they end up living an ocean apart?

When an email exchange prompts the grown sisters to indulge their reminiscing, they are startled to discover two shockingly different versions of their childhood.

Is the past really the way we remember it?

Initially reluctant to confront their past - and one another - with honesty, Iris and Lily find the courage to relive the most intimate experiences of their lives as the youngest sisters in a family of fourteen, struggling to survive under the tyranny of a hot-blooded father, bullying older brothers and the strictures of a Catholic upbringing.

The misunderstandings multiply as the growing girls become married women, and the tension between the sisters mounts as buried emotions and painful truths are revealed, shaking the very foundations of their relationship as sisters and putting their friendship at risk.

Eye-opening and thought-provoking, this engrossing family saga with its rich cast of colorful characters twists its way through the tumultuous turns of the sixties and seventies, from the snow and ice of Upstate New York to the olive-dappled hills of the sunny Italian Riviera.

The endearing and poignant episodes of Iris and Lily’s coming of age in the midst of a rapidly disintegrating family and changing society are both humorous and heartbreaking. Every woman who has grappled with her past or struggled with flailing family relationships will relate to these sisters, share a giggle with them, shed a tear with them, want to scream at them, and always and above all urge them on. Because there is a bit of Iris and Lily in all of us.

In this three-book series, Angela and Julie Scipioni have penned a page-turning biographical novel of universal scope which explores the tribulations and rewards of sisterhood, while exposing the everyday dramas of domestic life with searing honesty, genuine insight, and rare sensitivity.

A favorite with book clubs and perfect for lovers of family sagas and classic coming-of-age stories such as Gone With the Wind, Little Women, The Thorn Birds, and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, its unique, contemporary style sets Iris & Lily in a class of its own.
